Gifts, revealed: alphabet rocks

For those girls in my life who are learning to write, I made these little treasure boxes:

Filled with rocks I'd gathered this summer in Maine,

altered:

I loved this idea.

(Full disclosure: one recipient did say that "this is not a cute present," but she was seen playing with them later. Those are the kinds of gifts I tend to give kids: boring in the throws of unwrapping a zillion things, but appealing later.)

I would agree the gift was not cute. But it was quite beautiful. Those rocks are lovely. We only have nasty limesotne chalk rocks here in Texas.

How did you get the letter on the rocks?

Oh, yes, I should have explained...the letters were rub-on letters from a craft store, and they rubbed right on there with a popsicle stick. Easy as pie! (You can get rocks at the craft store, too, if you want.)

This is such a beautiful gift! My little boy Frank is getting this for his birthday in July for sure. You are a star, Lise.

THIS IS NOT A CUTE PRESENT...
it's a good thing her mother gave her the what-for, else I'd have been inclined to...
You ARE a star. Muffinmoon is correct.

i am a big fan of the 'appealing later gifts' they are the gifts that last and that share so much with the child. i will certainly be making some of these! my wheels are spinning now... : )

These are fabulous! I'm tucking the idea away for myself for later....

What a great idea! I love this sort of thing and you are right it will have a long term appeal beyond christmas day.

Lise, I'm so impressed by your Christmas making! Especially these rocks in their treasure box. I have been collecting rocks from the Oregon coast and lining our mantel. Now I think my next trip will focus on picking small smooth rocks to make the Sprout a set of these. Thanks for the inspiration!

I know this is way later, but I was wondering--how old was the child that you made these for?

Meryl, I haven't blogged in forever, and I've been getting tons of spam "comments," so I'm thrilled to get a real comment! I made these for 5-year-olds that year, but they'd be great for younger children as well. In fact, I'm glad you reminded me about them, because I think at 3 1/2, Lucy would love a set of these now!
